O. J. Simpson’s Luxury Watch

August 5th, 2011

O. J. Simpson is a former professional football player which became very famous not for the way he played the game, but because of the lengthy trial in which he was accused of killing his wife. He was actually a good football player and he still holds the record for the only player that rushed more than 2,000 yards in a 14-game season; the fact that the season was changed to 16 games may have helped him keep this record. He was also elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame back in ’85.

The trial found O. J. innocent in 1995 after a very long and much publicized period which brought the football star in a bad light. In 1997, civil court fined him for $33.5 million for the wrongful deaths of the two victims he was initially accused of killing. In 2007, he was arrested and he is currently in prison and has a punishment of 33 years in Lovelock Correctional Center.

OJ-Simpson-Replica

This picture shows O. J. Simpson wearing one of the most famous luxury watches – golden Rolex Submariner. What most people didn’t know is that this superb watch is actually a replica. He was initially forced to give the watch to Fred Goldman’s attorneys when it was believed that this Rolex was worth $22,000. After a jeweler found out that this was just a $100 replica, the watch was returned to him; Simpson told his lawyer that he paid $125 for the watch. It is interesting to see how a great star like O. J. Simpson who was worth millions at one point, now has a replica on his wrist.

Although there were offers to buy the watch for $10,000 just because it was Simpson’s, he wasn’t obligated to give it to the lawyers because its real market value was small.

John Galliano – The Collapse of a Genius

July 12th, 2011

John Galliano – one of the most talented designers of our time has collapsed along with his reputation and all his creative work at the bottom of the public opinion. The accusation for anti-Semitic and racial slurs while drunk, has shocked the fashion world. As a result of the situation the fashion house “Dior” eliminated the most creative and brilliant figure in its designers’ team.

Since 1995, Galliano has shown his different faces. He became famous after the appointment as a director in the fashion house “Givenchy” and, especially, after his memorable move to “Dior”. The fashion public enjoyed his models with eccentric, slightly startling appearance, resembling grotesque and his personal, a bit crazy behavior. The way Galliano looked seemed to explain the pieces of his incredible career and his work, completely obscure for the average person.

The scandal, which gained international fame, leaded once again to the collapse of a famous career. The public can do anything but to observe with regret the similar situation, which has already happened to other celebrities in the world like Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson. While Galliano’s lawyer explained he has not made anything insulting, few people would believe in Galliano’s innocence. After the suicide of Alexander McQueen, the dozens of allegations of Naomi Campbell and now the eccentric behavior of “Dior”’s designer, the true face of fashion shows that behind the great successes lie the dark shades of people’s personalities.

The fashion house “Dior” was not the only fashion giant, which has not supported Galliano. Karl Lagerfeld said heavy and sententious words against the culprit and not so much because of his words as for neglecting and irresponsibility of his own image. Lagerfeld underlined, that fashion designers are in the big business world, where everyone has to be very careful, especially in the times of the Internet. Natalie Portman, who became the face of “Dior” and the perfume “Miss Dior Cherie” and for many years maintained a friendship with Galliano, refused to wear a dress of the designer during the Oscar’s ceremony.

However, Roberto Cavalli, stayed behind his colleague, saying that he knows his friend and this is not the way Galliano really thinks. Behind the scenes of the fashion week in Milan, Giorgio Armani said that he regrets for the accused and added, it was a pity that Galliano was not informed about the recorded material. Obviously there will be difficult times fro John Galliano.

The scandals in the fashion world

April 13th, 2011

The fashion world without scandals is like the ocean without the hurricane, as a meal without spices, as a show without firework… What causes the noisiest collision in fashion circles? Are there any secret reasons behind? How can you distinguish the real scandal in the world of design from the pseudo-scandals, organized just for ads? Indeed, the real scandals, the difference in design opinions, the disagreement between the design concepts, are among the true motive force for advances in the world of the beauty. The public exchange of opinions between fashion models and photographers, fashion artists and journalists give green light for new ideas, forms and techniques.

One of the most spectacular scandals in the world of fashion are results of extravagant ideas or involuntary embarrassing in public places – shows and plays. When Naomi Campbell fall of the high platforms of her shoes on the catwalk, she “permitted” the fashion photographers to document the lack of underwear under her dress. Because of the violent protests in the Muslim community Karl Lagerfeld was forced to destroy an entire collection just because its models were embroidered with verses from the Koran. Similar drama appeared some years before with a collection of Donna Karan.

QURAN-CHANEL

Many remember the scandal when shows of Armani and Versace were scheduled for one and the same time. The two great designers wanted to withdraw from each other audience, photographers and journalists. Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld have exchanged sharp words that had passed beyond the good taste. Most of the performances of the designer Alexander McQueen also play with the nerves and the conservatism of the puritans. Years ago, for example, he stood on nails the journalists, the venerable connoisseur of the exquisite taste, as well as the environmentalists by proposing in the role of accessories to his clothes carcasses of dead birds and bones of human skeletons. Subsequently, it appeared, that all the preliminary information about the show was just a bad rumour or arrogant marketing trick, as nothing like that appeared on the McQueen’ show.

However, the audience is always on the edge when McQueen will present a show. Many remembered McQueen’s show in London in September 1998 when he presented his collection spring-summer 1999. The nerves of the viewers were taut, as the key role was given to Amy Malnis – twenty-two years old model with amputated legs. She was just a decent showing remarkable corset made of leather, wearing special boots on both prostheses. Malnis was in a perfect shape: she was record holder in long jump and sprint on the Paraolympic Games for disabled in Atlanta, 1996. However, many journalists accused the designer in the search of effects.

Infamous response induced the sarcastic film “Prêt-a-porter” of Robert Altman. Do not forget the scandals, related with the majority of advertisements for Benetton… Even the famous French cosmetic leader L’Oreal became subject to criticism regarding the misapplication of the image of Penelope Cruz in a commercial photo of mascara. The list of fashion scandals could be prolonged, but the question would stay: are these scandals really important or just deserve public’s condescension?
